One of the biggest publicity mistakes authors make is leading with their book.
“I wrote a new book” may be exciting to you.
But it doesn’t give a producer a reason to book you.
Producers need a story, segment or conversation their audience will care about.
Psychologist Elizabeth Lombardo faced this problem while promoting her book A Happy You.
She could have pitched herself as another psychologist who helps people become happier.
Instead, she developed specific ideas producers could picture as TV segments.
One was about helping overstressed mothers.
Another explained how to deal with fear after disasters dominated the news.
Both ideas led to appearances on The Today Show.
Elizabeth later appeared on Today more than 13 times, as well as on Dr. Oz, Steve Harvey, Fox News, and CNN.
The difference wasn’t simply her credentials or the quality of her book.
She learned how to turn her knowledge into focused ideas the media could use.
Try this with your own work.
Instead of asking, “How can I promote my book?”
Ask, “What useful story could a host introduce in one sentence?”
That shift can turn a sales pitch into a segment idea.
At The National Publicity Summit, you’ll receive media training and tools to help you uncover and present your strongest angles.
You’ll also meet hosts, producers, journalists and podcasters through online Zoom meetings.
